13 Days | 1,450nm | join the crew | from NZD$7,750
Embark on a 1,200-nautical-mile Category 0 sailing expedition from Opua, New Zealand to the tropical shores of Tonga, with rare stopovers at the remote Kermadec Islands and Minerva Reefs. This true blue-water adventure offers hands-on offshore sailing, celestial navigation, and the chance to explore some of the most untouched corners of the South Pacific.
Departing from Opua in the scenic Bay of Islands, we head 540nm northeast to the Kermadec Islands, New Zealand’s northernmost outpost. These rugged, uninhabited volcanic islands rise dramatically from the deep ocean and are rich in birdlife, marine mammals, and geological history. Though landing is restricted to protect the environment, sailing past Raoul Island offers a rare glimpse into this protected wilderness.
We continue 330nm north to the Minerva Reefs, a pair of stunning submerged atolls with crystal-clear waters and abundant sea life. These reefs offer a spectacular anchorage in the middle of the ocean, perfect for snorkelling over coral gardens, exploring the shallow lagoons, and soaking up the surreal solitude of this remote haven.
The final 280nm leg of the voyage brings us to Pangaimotu Island, near Tongatapu, Tonga. A welcoming anchorage awaits, with warm waters, swaying palms, and the relaxed rhythm of island life. You’ll have time to relax, explore local culture, and reflect on the incredible passage.
This is an expedition for those seeking true ocean adventure—remote, raw, and unforgettable. Whether you’re an experienced offshore sailor or looking for your first big passage, this journey is one you’ll never forget.
