For only the second time in decades, a fully crewed Category 1 ocean race will be staged between Australia and New Zealand, charting a bold 1,270-nautical-mile course across the infamous Tasman Sea. The Sydney to Auckland Yacht Race starts in the heart of Sydney Harbour and finishes in Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour, New Zealand’s yachting capital. Jointly hosted by the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club (RPAYC) and the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS), this historic event is open to both offshore cruising and racing yachts under IRC and PHS divisions.
This is no ordinary passage—it’s a true test of seamanship, endurance, and offshore racing skill. With our skippers having crossed the Tasman Sea more than 20 times, including two solo voyages, we understand just how powerful and unpredictable this body of water can be. With no landmass between Australia and Antarctica, the Tasman allows long-period swells to build for thousands of miles, and its weather systems are as changeable as they are intense. Sudden fronts, steep seas, and strong currents are all part of the challenge—making this race one of the toughest offshore events in the Southern Hemisphere.
Crews will assemble in Sydney for several days of preparation and safety drills, dialling in sail-handling routines, checking offshore gear, and reviewing navigation strategies. As the starting gun fires in Sydney’s iconic harbour—framed by the Opera House and Harbour Bridge—teams will set their course across the open ocean for a high-stakes adventure few have attempted.
The finish in Auckland, known globally as the City of Sails and current home of the America’s Cup, is both a tactical milestone and a sailor’s celebration. After a demanding ocean crossing, arriving into Auckland Harbour offers an overwhelming sense of achievement. It’s a race that will forge deep bonds, hone offshore skills, and create memories that last a lifetime. Whether you're racing for a trophy or for the pure thrill of the blue water experience, the 2025 Sydney to Auckland Yacht Race is a bucket-list offshore challenge.
